South Africa has officially introduced a remote work visitor visa and a points-based system for work visas, aiming to attract high-earning long-term visitors.
Gazetted on October 9, this visa allows employees of foreign companies to stay for three months to three years, provided they earn at least R650,796 (€33,800) annually. Department of Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber hailed these reforms as transformative, stating they reposition South Africa as a premier destination for investment and tourism.
The remote work visa will not only stimulate the economy by encouraging high-income individuals to spend in South Africa but also strengthen tax resources through increased VAT contributions.

Industry leaders, including Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa from the Tourism Business Council, support these changes, anticipating a significant increase in tourist numbers. Cape Town is already capitalising on this opportunity by promoting itself as a leading remote working location.
With these reforms, visitors can enjoy longer stays while boosting local businesses, heralding a bright future for South Africa’s tourism sector.
